Mental Health Care

Health professionals are encouraged to contact local mental health triage to discuss child and adolescent mental health crisis referral, support and treatment services. CAMHS in Victoria have been specifically trained and are well placed to provide evidence based care for eating disorders within their catchment.

For Paediatric / Adolescent medical assessment and monitoring, the Paediatric / Adolescent Medicine Services at the following hospitals offer outpatient medical assessment and monitoring, and access to inpatient specialist medical care for adolescents with eating disorders:

Barwon Health Eating Disorder Service
Minimum age: 12 years         Maximum age: 25 years
Public Catchments: Barwon
The service includes a specialist early intervention program for young people aged up to 25 years in the Barwon region. Referrals for young people 0 – 25 are accepted via the Child and Youth triage service on 1300 094 187.
Referrals: accepted directly from consumers themselves, their families or a GP/Paediatrician.
Minimum age: 12 years         Maximum age: 17 years
Public Catchments: North Western Melbourne

The Royal Children’s Hospital Eating Disorders Program is a collaboration between the RCH Centre for Adolescent Health, RCH Integrated Mental Health Programs, the University of Melbourne and the University of Chicago. The service offers an assessment clinic, outpatient Family-Based Treatment and inpatient paediatric treatment for young people and families living in the western metropolitan region of Melbourne.

Referrals: General medical practitioners (GPs) can make referrals to the RCH Eating Disorder Service via the RCH Specialist Clinics referral process and faxed to (03) 9345 5034.

Community Health Services

Health Services sit alongside general practice and privately funded services to make up the primary health sector in Victoria. Some are also major providers of a range of health and human services including drug and alcohol, disability, dental, post-acute care, home and community care, mental health services and community rehabilitation.

Headspace
Minimum age: 12 years                     Maximum age: 24 years

Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds, along with assistance in promoting young peoples’ wellbeing in mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drug services.
Information and services for young people, their families and friends as well as health professionals can be accessed through the website, headspace centres, and online counselling service eheadspace.

The Bouverie Centre
Location: Brunswick

The Bouverie Centre provides family approaches in mental health service provision including eating disorders.

Web-based: Eating Disorders Victoria maintains a database on their website How Far is Too Far? of health professionals in private practice in Victoria who have registered as having an interest or experience in treating eating disorders.  When typing in your search criteria, ensure you put ‘eating disorders’ in as well as the health professional/service type you are looking for e.g. eating disorder dietitian.

EDV Psychology
Minimum age: 13 years         Suitable for carers of someone with an eating disorders

Provides private psychology sessions for people experiencing eating disorders and related issues, as well as for family and friends who are supporting a loved one.
Sessions are currently available in Abbotsford and all of our psychologists have expertise in the field of eating disorders.

The Geelong Clinic (Healthscope) Eating Disorders Inpatient Program is a specialised program that has been developed and designed to provide a comprehensive treatment program delivered by trained staff and tailored to the needs of individual clients.

The Melbourne Clinic Eating Disorders Unit
Minimum age:16 years
Location: Richmond

The Melbourne Clinic (Healthscope) Eating Disorder Unit is a 21 bed specialist unit for the treatment of Feeding and Eating Disorders for people requesting treatment and support for diagnosed eating disorders.  The service also includes day program and outreach programs.
