Overview
Enhanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT-E) was refined from the original Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) framework in 2008 and has since emerged as the foremost recognised treatment for eating disorders among adults due to its efficacy.
CBT-E is mainly used as an outpatient therapy for adults diagnosed with:
- Anorexia Nervosa
- Atypical Anorexia Nervosa
- Bulimia Nervosa
- Binge Eating Disorder, or Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED)
CBT-E can be used for adult day programs and inpatient programs, and an outpatient adaptation is available for adolescents and young people with a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. The therapy sessions are carried out individually, either face-to-face or through telehealth video or phone calls, led by a qualified therapist. In the adolescent program, family engagement is typically expected as part of the treatment process.
Core components of CBT-E:
- Focus on the Cycle: CBT-E views the eating disorder as a cycle driven by unhelpful thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
- Cognitive Restructuring: CBT-E focusses on challenging negative thinking patterns that contribute to eating disorder behaviours.
- Behavioural Strategies: The therapy explores practical skills to manage eating habits and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
- Tailored Approach: CBT-E is highly individualised. Therapists adapt the program to address specific eating disorder challenges.
Benefits of CBT-E:
- Improved eating patterns and normalised weight
- Reduced bingeing and purging behaviours
- Enhanced self-esteem and body image
- Development of healthier coping skills
